For the first time is devoted to an extensive survey exhibition the equally complex and fascinating phenomenon of realism. Some 200 works from the fields of painting, sculpture, photography and video art show how and in what width succeeds artists to transform the diversity of the modern world in pictures. The spectrum ranges from the realism of the 19th century over the New Objectivity and the photo-realism of the 1960s to contemporary art. Historical and stylistic boundaries border present exhibition and book the complex issue of the act on the still life and the landscape to the history painting in eight detailed chapters. Wanted this is the dialogue between the generations of artists. Works of famous greats such as Gustave Courbet, Adolph Menzel, Christian Schad, Charles Sheeler, Richard Estes and Franz Gertsch are represented as well as works by younger artists. The unifying element is always the question of reality and the representability of the modern world with all its contradictions, tensions and beauties. This richly illustrated catalog book reveals a long open topic of art and shows a problem that extends to the horizon of the virtual worlds of today.
